Choosing The Right Airbrush https://autowest.com.au/the-garage/choosing-the-right-airbrush/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=choosing-the-right-airbrush Wed, 05 Oct 2022 06:17:39 +0000 https://autowest.com.au/?p=835

You might be a seasoned professional or an amateur starting out. You could be airbrushing a mural, vehicle, cake, body or anything in between and unsurprisingly there are as many airbrushes on the market as there are uses for it it seems. So how do you know what one is right for you?

First of all, how do airbrushes work?

Airbrushes, when connected to an air compressor, work by breaking down the liquid coming through the airbrush into tiny droplets that produce a “spray”. This process is called atomisation. The liquid then comes out as a distinct line, a fine mist, or anything in between.

Atomisation produces a coating that blends and gradients nicely and in ways that other tools such as paint brushes struggle to do or sometimes are not even possible.

There are three different types of airbrushes you can purchase:

  • Gravity Feed – The most popular style of airbrush. The material is placed into a “fluid cup” on the top of the airbrush and the force of gravity helps the material move through the gun. This helps in reducing the amount of material being used, helps in utilising all the material, and allows the airbrush to operate at lower air pressures. This style is generally easier to clean as well.
  • Side Feed – This style is used when you want maximum visibility on your job. It draws the material from a side-mounted cup/bottle through the side of the airbrush. They generally can be attached to either the left or right side depending on your job and comfort.
  • Siphon Feed – Also known as a bottom or bottle feed. This is generally used for larger jobs with multiple bottles and larger volumes of material. The material is brought up from a jar or cup from underneath the airbrush. In this style the air compressor does all the work, using more air pressure and more material.

Once you’ve decided what style of airbrush suits you best, you’ll need to decide whether you would like to get a Dual Action or Single Action airbrush.

Dual Action

Also called a double-action airbrush. They allow the user to control both the air and paint flow at the same time. Generally, this is done by pressing down and pulling back the trigger simultaneously. Pulling back the trigger releases the material while pressing down the trigger releases the air. A dual-action airbrush will give the user better control over their work and can create more spray patterns. This is generally a more popular style over the single action.

Single Action

By pressing down on the trigger on a single action airbrush you are only controlling the air. The airbrush features independent controls for the air and the paint. Most single action airbrushes feature a dial on the handle that sets the rate of release of the paint when the trigger is pressed. Less popular than the dual action airbrushes a single action airbrush can be a great first step for users starting out and learning to airbrush. It can also be helpful for people who need a precise spray pattern to be repeated the exact same way time and time again.

https://www.iwata-airbrush.com/airbrush-basics.html

So you have decided which action you’d like to purchase – next is the mixing style.

External Mix

Generally, the second choice the external mix can create a coarser atomisation and potentially uneven spray patterns when compared to an internal mix. This is due to the air and paint being released through two separate channels and are mixed together outside the airbrush (i.e. externally).

Internal Mix

For a more consistent and controlled mix where the air and material are mixed together inside (i.e. internally) the airbrush before leaving it. This also produces a much higher atomisation and even spray patterns. This is the most common style and many manufacturers only will make this style of mixing in their products.

Other Features

There are many other features to consider when it comes to airbrushes whether you are an amateur or professional. Many airbrushes will not come with all of the features below, so it is best to consider what is most important to you, what you are doing and the desired finish you are after.

These additional features can include:

  • Do you want a Main Lever (most common airbrush style trigger)? Or a Trigger Style (a front sided ‘spray gun style’ trigger)?
  • Do you need a MAC Valve? Also known as the Micro Air Control. Mainly for use by professionals, this feature enables incremental control of airflow for a fine to medium spray and for creating stipple effects.
  • Do you need a Quick Flush Cutaway Handle? Or are you happy to manually clean your airbrush? The handle reveals the needle chucking nut in the gun. You can pull that nut back while pushing the main lever down and back when putting a cleaner through the airbrush so you can easily give your airbrush a quick clean without taking it apart.
  • Does your job require expert precision? If so do you want a Preset Handle? Also known as a cutaway handle (not to be mixed up with a Quick Flush Cutaway Handle), the Preset handle will limit how far back you can pull the main lever. This allows for a specific line width and spray pattern each time.
  • Do you need extra fluid cups? These can come in handy if you have a job that requires both large areas and small detailed areas so that you can get the job done quicker and more efficiently with fewer paint changes.

Also… WHAT IS A STIPPLE EFFECT AND WHY DO I WANT IT?!

A stipple effect is an airbrushing technique used for creating a texture and gradients of colour pattern that simulates various solidity or shading by using small dots. Simply put, the larger the number of dots in an area, the darker/more colour it shows. The lighter areas or more blended colours use fewer dots and are spaced further apart in an area. There are a few different ways to create this effect both with an airbrush that has the inbuilt ability and without the inbuilt ability. We have found a video on each style for you to check out. There is Airbrush Ways’ “Stipple effect. How to airbrush. A step-by-step guide, for beginners and more.” which you can find here. Or if you would like to watch a technique on stippling without an airbrush that has the inbuilt ability there is ExpertVillage Leaf Group’s “Airbrush Effects: Stippling”.

Anest Iwata’s 5 Ways To Spray

Anest Iwata has helped in creating a blog on airbrushing and separating the uses of an airbrush into 5 stages. To read the full article you can find it here or continue reading below for more information.

The 5 stages according to Anest Iwata are:

#1 Absolute Precision
#2 Total Control
#3 All-Star Versatility
#4 Effortless coverage
#5 Full Finish

Absolute Precision

The finest finishes for extreme detail and used for intricate work. You would be using this style of airbrush generally if you have high-level airbrush skills and know how to confidently care for and maintain your airbrush. This style of airbrush would typically be used for spraying thinner material or reduced paint for optimal flow. The typical sizes of needles for this would be between 0.1mm – 0.25mm.

Total Control

For people who have a beginner understanding to advanced knowledge of airbrushing and need to paint a fine to medium level of detail and scale. According to Anest Iwata this is generally for hobbyists or professional painters. The typical sizes of needles for this would be between 0.2mm – 0.35mm.

All-Star Versatility

The medium-range sized nozzles are ideal for fine to wide levels of detail and scale and is perfect for beginner to high-level airbrush skills. This is the perfect style of airbrush if you are using thin to thicker viscosity or pearlized spray materials by hobbyists or professional painters. A perfect versatile brush type for general-purpose usage using only one airbrush. The typical sizes of needles for this would be between 0.3mm – 0.45mm.

Effortless Coverage

For spraying medium range detail and coverage area with generally great atomisation at low air pressures. Ideal for beginner to high-level airbrush skills. Usually used by both hobbyists and professionals. The typical sizes of needles for this would be between 0.35mm – 0.4mm.

Full Finish

Generally, the widest spraying pattern and can be used for extra wide coverage areas. Perfect for a smooth finish over those larger areas and ideal for beginner to high-level airbrush skills. Usually used by both hobbyists and professionals. The typical sizes of needles for this would be between 0.4mm – 0.5mm.

Now you have a greater understanding of the types of airbrushes and how they work you can find our range of airbrushes here! If you have any other questions, you can always call us and talk to one of our staff. We are always more than happy to help with any questions you have about your airbrush or choosing the right one for you!

Auto West Calendar 2020 – Our Sunday Drivers https://autowest.com.au/the-garage/auto-west-calendar-2020-our-sunday-drivers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=auto-west-calendar-2020-our-sunday-drivers https://autowest.com.au/the-garage/auto-west-calendar-2020-our-sunday-drivers/#respond Tue, 01 Dec 2020 05:36:51 +0000 https://autowest.com.au/?p=1267

The 2020 Auto West Calendar has one idea and goal. To show our customers our love for “Sunday Driving” vehicles through our personal collections of some of our team’s cars, plus 3 vehicles from customers and close friends who have award-winning cars.

At Auto West we pride ourselves on our experience and customer service, and helping customers achieve their goals – whether it is their first time or they are seasoned professionals, because every job deserves maximum effort in rebuilding or customising.

From Chevys to classic Holdens, we love all kinds of cars – take a look at 2020’s featured vehicles.

1964 CHEVY NOVA

Jet Black and immaculate condition. Jame’s Chevy Nova has been an Auto West icon for years now.

1946 CHEVY FLATBED

For many years this flatbed was seen out the front of the Auto West Paint Supplies Bathurst store or these days more likely even seen at trade shows being used as our product display table.

1967 HOLDEN HR

Original colour, many original parts. This Holden HR is owned by the GM of Auto West Paint Supplies. Nathan has taken this car out for a Sunday drive more times than he can remember and the passion for this car shows there will be countless more drives too.

APRIL

Pete Sinclair’s Ermine White 1968 Chevrolet Impala took around 6 months to restore. With both windscreens and both back guards needing to be replaced, along with small amounts of rust and panel repairs the vehicle wasn’t in the worst shape but enough to keep himself and Villawood Engines busy restoring it. The vehicle was painted in Protec 625 paint 2 years ago and has been used primarily as a leisure vehicle since. With his one word of advice Pete says “Do not buy a rusted-out car if you are not a panel beater, if you cannot do 90% of the work yourself, don’t do it”.

MAY

The 1951 Deluxe Club Sedan200 Series Packard was a 7-year feat for Lee Harris finishing in early 2014. The main issues were the major rust in both the rear quarter panels and floor. While the majority of the work was done by himself, the rust removal and upholstery were done by a professional. The purpose of this car is mainly the lazy Sunday drives though there have been a few shows that this vehicle has participated in both competitive and friendly. The vibrant red colour is named ‘Packard Matadoe Maroon’ and is painted in Protec acrylic paint. Lee’s best DIY tip would be “Firstly count the cost and do some research before taking on such a big task and be willing to try anything yourself”.

JUNE

The 1953 Morris Oxford Utility Truck was a 5-year venture for the owners Bernie and Paul. With the ute being completely rusted out, many people including a professional said it would not be rebuildable. Paul never gave up and was eventually putting the finishing touches on. It was painted just 18 months ago (2016) in Protec’s Direct Gloss (GMIX) using a custom colour based on a 1984 Toyota Aqua colour and the featured 1.5ltr Nissan Super Charged Engine was installed. Finally, the vehicle is now being used happily as a Sunday driver. Paul and Bernie’s best tip would be to “Start off with a good body and go from there”.

JULY

Built in the back shed by Jon Kendall with a little help from a few experts, this 1977 Torana LXSS has been featured in various shows. It is hard to believe that 1 year ago (2017) this ended as the finished product of a nine-month project which started off as a body that had a lot of rust and no windows. Luckily the motor was working, though the hardest part was the fact that it was already started and Jon had to work with what the previous owners had completed. Jon worked through a fair amount of setbacks and he said the best advice he can give would be to “Network amongst the vehicle community, especially the specific makes and models of the cars you’re working on.” The Torana was painted in Protec Basecoat and has an Extra Flow Clear over the top of the GMH colour Morpheus and is now used as both a show car and as a personal leisure vehicle.

AUGUST

Julius’ Wimbledon White Cortina which was completed in 2007 in a Protec 2K paint is one of the classiest cars out there. The 1964 Mark 1 Super Cortina is completely original besides one little secret. When restoring they needed an engine… an engine they got from a 1971 Cortina instead. A decision they needed to make though when asked for a tip he said “No matter what, if the original is good, leave it that way!” Through hard work, the entire restoration was done by himself and a few mechanics, though overall the vehicle was not in the worst state. With a bot of rust bubbles in the old paintwork and the rear taillight pushed in, the restoration was not nearly as bad as they can be. In saying that, the 3 years was no easy feat but paid off as being a prize-winning show car and an enjoyable casual drive.

SEPTEMBER

“Talk to the professionals and talk to Auto West!” was the DIY advice given by Eddie Hopson, the proud owner of the 1974 Ford XB Coupe. After around 8 months of restorations with a complete stri down due to surface rust and dodgy paintwork, along with a rebuilt interior and a custom dash, the vehicle was completed. This was 6 years ago and Eddie has enjoyed those leisurly Sunday drives ever since. For those who love the paintwork it was done in Protec 606 (now GMIX Direct Gloss) 2K Solid with a clear coat and the colour name is EDS Red.

OCTOBER

The most unique car in the calendar. This Coffin Car is exactly what it’s name represents. Custom made by Mick from Boneyard Kustomz, this car is quite literally made out of a coffin. The only thing that is familiar is the engine. Powered by a 1970’s Chevrolet engine it has power and sophistication. As for the paint, it is painted in Protec’s 606 (now GMIX Direct Gloss) 2K Solid in a simple Jet Black. Completed just over 8 months ago and now used as a DIY car only for ‘Loving’. In the same wit as making a vehicle out of a coffin, the best advice from Mick that could be given when wanting to restore a vehicle would be… “Get someone else to do it!”

NOVEMBER

The most important thing that someone needs to remember is to “Use the same products all the way through the restoration” Barry from Nelson Bodyworks explains. It took 12 months to rebuild the 1955 Dodge Royal. It was stripped back and painted in Protec 606 (now GMIX Direct Gloss) with a two-tone colour scheme. Collen Green on the bottom and a custom green metallic on top. In 2002 the owner Darren Hill got his car back and it is now a leisure car for those Sunday drives.

DECEMBER

It’s been 5 years now since Michael from Deluxe Restorations completed his 1969 Holden HT Premier. In a full ground-up rebuild, the ‘Prem’ was stripped back to bare metal and recoloured, Aluminium Metallic, in Protec Basecoat with an Extra Flow Clear on top. Michael said it was a bit of work, but it could have been much worse. It had to be completely resprayed and there were, of course, the regular issues that all restorers have with a car of this age.

Auto West Calendar 2019 – Industrial Champions https://autowest.com.au/the-garage/auto-west-calendar-2019-industrial-champions/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=auto-west-calendar-2019-industrial-champions Sun, 01 Dec 2019 05:33:14 +0000 https://autowest.com.au/?p=1163

Auto West’s 2018 Calendar showed a sense of memory, and this year the 2019 calendar features some mighty power! We’re celebrating the working side of vehicles, on the road, rail and rivers. Nobody has ever said that a passion in this industry needs to stay within a car.

Australia has a rugged landscape. It is vast and hearty and our workers on this land need to be the same. The customers in this calendar either create or own vehicles that work on the land and on our rivers. They are used for transporting goods or people and help them with their everyday jobs.

Last year we wanted to send a message to everyone. That message… at Auto West, we don’t just sell to people who are passionate about cars, we ARE passionate about cars.

This year, we wanted to share a different message. We wanted to show that we are a family-owned and operated business who have worked hard for years, building the company into what it is today. We take pride in ourselves on our hard work and efforts – just like so many other hard working Australians.

The McCormick Farmall

Restored by Barry Hughes in Bathurst. The iconic McCormick Farmall is still able to be used and is an absolute sight to see.

The Tractor Shed

Barry Hughes really loves his vintage machinery. This is evident in his immaculate Tractor Shed.

Victa Mowers

The iconic Aussie Victa mowers are a passion to restore by Danny Vella. While restoring them he takes the utmost care in making sure they are kept as close to original as possible.

Massey Ferguson Tractors

Danny Vella doesn’t just take pride in his Victa’s but his Massey Ferguson’s too. Painted in the original iconic red that has barely changed in the decades from original make. These tractors look crisp and stand out amongst the crowd.

Massey Ferguson 135 Model

The impressive Massey Ferguson Tractor gets a second appearance in this calendar with GWS’s paint job of their 135 Model.

Kenworth Truck

Justin Borg’s Kenworth truck has been repainted in the DNA custom paint range. The Candy Red truly stands out and is one of the most impressive looking haulage vehicles around.

The Nepean Belle

This beautiful River Cruise Paddle Boat has been looked after and loved by Chris at Bennet Cruising for many years. It is one of the most unique vehicles we have had the chance to photograph to date. Its amazing crisp  colours really stand out against the greens and browns of the Australian landscape.

Tram

A School in the local Nepean District used this old tram as a project for the seniors to work on together and was restored and painted mostly by the students. They now use it as a seniors lunch area and is a reminder of the teamwork that the school had in taking on such a big job.
